If you've read our home page you'll understand some of where I come from. I'd like to go more in depth here. I grew up, and am still, hunry to knowledge. I am what some call a life long learner. I grew up in the public school system, though I had always wanted to be homeschooled. I felt like I could learn so much more on my own, but that just wasn't the reality of our world. So, instead I continued my education after school and on weekends. The library was my best friend and years later it has become tied with the internet.
I wanted that quality education for my own kids. Unfortunately, my husband didn't believe in homeschooling so into the public school system they went. And boy was I
completely disappointed in what they were learning. The topics were shallow and so much time was wasted that they would bring home things they had barely started. No mastery of any topic was complete and they brought home attitudes and bad behaviors.
So I began the journey I had gone as a child. Make their education better, or fill in the gaps, from home. The kids had a blast. We also got involved in a homeschool group and within a couple years went on field trips with. To this year every year we go on a day trip to Seattle with the group. The kids get to interact with other kids that are much better behanved and have many of the same interests they do, while they get to do something educational in another city. Last year we hit the Police museum, the Klondike Gold Rush museum and the fire museum. This year we'll be hitting a glass blowing factory.
In my hunt for others who homeschool part time after public school, I couldn't find much. I hope this blog will become a place for others to find support and answers on how to fill in the gaps and create a love of learning in their children outside of the public school system.
